I’m thinking a lot about cover design for my next book KAYA, especially the spine.
Spines are an afterthought most of the time, but really, after it’s initial release, the spine is the only thing people see of your hard work when they walk in the bookstore. I find most spines almost illegible from a distance.
Black and yellow are the clear winner here, right? Same reason it’s the color of most road signs. But it’s also important to try and make that spine as WIDE as possible so you can take up some real estate on the shelves. The standard 5 issues x 22 pages = 100 page collection makes for a pretty slim spine so I’m thinking of ways to counter that- Longer single issues, extra illustrations, pages between scenes that give the story more room, etc, etc.
Anyway, for other comic book creators and designers on here, check out your own shelf and see what’s affective. It’s an interesting exercise .

More creator-owned classics.
Gertrude from @skottieyoung’s I Hate Fairyland.
Kirkman, Walker & @ryanottley’s Invincible.
@mrmarkmillar & @johnromitajr’s Kick-Ass.
And some others in there too if you look hard.

Working on a new idea for a comic book. Just doing the writing in this one.
Much like my work on Gravediggers Union, I like to figure out the whole story-arc and see if I’ve got something special before I bring it to an artist and pitch them on drawing it. I need to have the whole thing figured out in broad strokes. The story can change in the telling, but (at least right now) I need that detailed road map at first. Once I have that I really dig in to the characters and let them surprise me and push the story where they need it to go.
